What is hard resin? Is it a material that is lightweight like plastic, or is it more similar to rubber? And how does it differ from metal? These are some of the most common questions that come up when choosing hard resin keychains – especially among customers encountering this material for the first time.
There’s a good reason for that. Hard resin does not behave like traditional plastic, it is not flexible like rubber, and it does not have the properties of metal. It is a material with its own distinct characteristics – both visually and in terms of use.
This is why it is worth comparing:
- exactly how a hard resin keychain differs from a metal keychain
- what properties each material has
- and which applications each solution is best suited for
For companies, agencies and event organizers, choosing the right material is about more than aesthetics. It affects how the product is perceived, its durability and the impression it makes on the recipient.
In the rest of the article, we present the key differences between these materials in a clear and structured way to make it easier to choose the right option for your specific application.

What is hard resin?
Hard resin is a material that becomes rigid, durable, and resistant once cured. It is neither typical plastic nor rubber. It is lighter than metal, while being significantly more solid than standard plastic. This makes it an interesting alternative to metal - it offers a premium look at a lower cost, without the characteristic weight of metal.
It offers a great deal of design flexibility - custom shapes and 3D forms can be created, along with full-color graphics with a subtle raised effect. The material also allows for precise reproduction of small details and 3D detailing on the back of the product - from raised lettering and logos to decorative patterns.
Key features:
- full-color graphics and complete freedom in shape design
- precise reproduction of even the smallest details
- the ability to create pronounced raised elements and a 3D effect
- a lightweight construction that remains solid and durable
- an attractive premium look at a lower cost than metal

What are the characteristics of a metal keychain?
A metal keychain offers similar design possibilities to a hard resin keychain - custom shapes, including cut-out shapes, can be created, along with full-color graphics, fine details, and subtly raised elements. This allows the design to be both simple and minimalist or more eye-catching.
What sets metal apart is its solid feel, noticeable weight, and distinctive finishing. The metal edges and back can be covered with color, creating a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing result. The noticeable weight of a metal keychain further emphasizes its solid character. This makes it a popular choice for projects where the promotional item is intended to feel more exclusive, durable, and representative.
Key features:
- full-color graphics with precise reproduction of fine details
- the ability to create raised elements with a texture that can be felt under the finger
- carefully finished edges and a colored back for a cohesive look
- a solid construction with a distinctive, noticeable weight
- an elegant, more classic character
- durability and a premium feel, ideal for more representative projects

Frequently asked questions about hard resin and metal keychains
- What is the difference between hard resin and metal in promotional products?
Hard resin allows a design to be reproduced in a realistic, three-dimensional form with rich colors and fine details. Metal, on the other hand, offers greater durability, an elegant look and a precise, technical finish – especially for projects that require clear contours and structural details. - Is hard resin more durable than standard plastic and suitable for everyday use?
Yes – hard resin is more durable than the standard plastic used in low-cost promotional products. Once cured, it becomes rigid, resistant to damage and well suited to everyday use. - Which material reproduces design details better – resin or metal?
It depends on the type of design. Resin allows you to reproduce depth and create a 3D effect, while metal works particularly well for precise structural elements and clearly defined contours. - Can I achieve a 3D effect with both materials?
Yes, but in different ways. With resin, the 3D effect comes from the actual shape and volume – the elements are genuinely raised and three-dimensional. With metal, the effect is achieved through texture and subtle raised details. - Can I see the design before production?
Yes – we prepare the design and 3D visualizations before production, and, if needed, we can also create a paid prototype. This gives you full control over the final result before production begins. - Can I see hard resin and metal in person so I can compare them?
Yes – for companies and agencies, we prepare and send product samples so you can see and compare hard resin and metal in person. This allows you to check their appearance, texture and quality of workmanship before placing an order.

For the MEVO bike-sharing system, we created 1,500 keychains where the use of metal and precision laser cutting allowed us to reproduce the bicycle’s structure with exceptional accuracy – including the clearly defined frame, wheels, basket, spokes and mudguard.
The metal provided durability and resistance to intensive everyday use, while also allowing us to maintain a high level of detail. Thanks to the raised, dimensional texture, the elements gained a subtle 3D effect, further enhancing the realism and visual appeal of the keychain.
Choosing the material is a decision about how your brand will be perceived
A keychain is more than just a promotional product – it is a tangible brand carrier that reaches the recipient directly. Choosing the right material strengthens your message, makes your brand more memorable and influences how your company is perceived from the very first interaction.
